Humans have been cooking with olive oil for thousands of years, and they have been using cannabis for just about as long so combining one with the other seems a natural fit. Because olive oil is one of the most versatile ingredients in our kitchen infusing it with cannabis creates thousands of medicating and recreating possibilities. Whether you want to use your cannabis-infused olive oil in a pasta recipe, a loaf of bread or you just want to make a tincture that makes regular medicating easy the process is the same.
Ingredients
2 cups organic extra virgin olive oil
1 cup of dried cannabis (approximately 1/4 ounce or 7 grams)
Latex/vinyl gloves
Sealable jar
Air tight storage container
Cheesecloth or straining bag
Large rubber band
Instructions
Before beginning, you want to make sure that you have already decarboxylated your cannabis. To do this, you will need to preheat your oven to 240° and spread about a quarter ounce of slightly ground cannabis onto a baking sheet and bake for about 40 minutes. This process “activates” the THC by removing the acid, or carboxyl group, thus converting THCA to THC. You may skip this step if you wish to avoid most of the psychotropic effects from your finished product.
In a pot bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Mix olive oil and cannabis in jar and seal with lid. Place the jar in the pot, using a small piece of folded towel or aluminum foil between the jar and the pot to dissipate heat.
Once water boils reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours. Remove the jar and allow it to cool down to room temperature. This is very important, unless you don’t mind handling molten goo.
Put on your gloves. If you don’t have an inexpensive straining bag then place 2-3 layers of cheese cloth over your container, wrapping it snug with a rubber band. Once your cheesecloth is in place, carefully pour your mixture of cannabis and olive oil over the cheesecloth, straining the plant ingredients from the oil. You can use a silicone spatula to squeeze out the extra oil.
Cover and store in a cool dark spot.
